Please introduce yourself and tell us about what you do.
My name is Mirthe Blussé, I work as an abstract artist between Amsterdam and Barcelona. I graduated from the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague in 2007. My practice is centered around painting, drawing and collage.
What would you like people to notice in your artwork?
The common ground in my art is the search for a balance between a minimal composition and a gestural, intuitive touch. I am really inspired by nature and make long walks in the hills whenever I can. People often tell me that my art gives them a sense of tranquility, that looking at it makes them feel at peace. I guess this is a result of my way of working: I spend many hours in my atelier, creating in silence to be completely open, to allow things to happen. I work very intuitively. When that resonates with others in the end and people connect with themselves through my art, I feel blessed.
Could you explain more about how being a woman has affected your career?
For me, it is simple: my work is my passion! So, I work hard like anyone else would - man or woman. I never really understood why some people treat me different just because I am a woman. But luckily the times are changing! So instead of complaining I’d rather be part of the change and help pave the way for future generations – both men and women.
Can you name some other women (artists) that inspire you and explain why they do so?
I am very much inspired by women like Ethel Adnan, Yoko Ono, Helen Frankenthaler, Patti Smith, Maya Angelou, Georgia O’Keeffe, Ana Mendieta, Francesca Woodman, Rei Kawakubo, Barbara Hepworth, Leonora Carrington, and Charlotte Perriand. They are free spirited, poetic, and intellectual artists who combine their unique talent with originality, persistence, and a strong will.
I am amazed and encouraged by contemporary artists like Rosemarie Auberson, Antonia Showering, Dani Schafer, Nengi Omuku, Nadia del Pozo, Marlene Dumas, Daisy Parris and Claudy Jongstra, amongst many others. Through their work they create space to connect with our emotions and imagination, which I find very enriching. I believe this helps us to define and understand both ourselves and others.
