OVER MUNTHE
MUNTHE is a conscious heritage brand merging fashion with art. Founded back in 1994
in Copenhagen by Creative Director Naja Munthe as an artistic and craft-focused antidote
to the contemporary fashion industry, MUNTHE is today a well-known and established
Danish fashion house. Known for its consciously curated styles rooted in art.
The essence of MUNTHE is the serenity every style is made with. From carefully selected,
high-quality fabrics to delicate details in coating and lining, from tight and neatly
construction to a commitment to low-impact production. For MUNTHE aesthetic is holistically: It is important that the clothes are not only pleasing on the outside, but also on
the inside – as well as being responsibly produced.
Another signature of MUNTHE is the conceptual embodiment of contradictions and contrasts: soft silhouettes with a tailored touch makes for versatile styles that work across multiple occasions depending on how you style them. Timeless and expressive wardrobe staples rooted in art and craftmanship, MUNTHE is always on a mission to liberate expressions and personalities.
In the midst of deadlines and a fast-paced fashion industry, we do our best to operate with serenity. At MUNTHE, we take our time to contemplate and reflect, embrace longer processes when it comes to sustainability, listen carefully to each other’s ideas, and act mindful in every aspect of our way of being. To listen and encourage each other in challenging situations, is a mindset that we do our best to embed in our ways.
Denmark has a cultural legacy of prioritizing a well-balanced work life. At MUNTHE, we actively support the possibility of a flexible work week where people plan their work time individually according to their given needs and where working from home is a valid option if we need to immerse ourselves or take care of a sick child and where everyone can plan their own free time. We genuinely believe that by cultivating a culture rooted in trust and freedom with responsibility we create the best platform for a well-balanced work life – a balance that our people and our company will prosper equally from.
We respect diversity across sexuality, religion, age, political views and nationality and we promote this actively through employment and collaborations.
At MUNTHE, we value professional integrity and stimulate this by bringing highly skilled people together who are ambitious in their own field but dedicated to work together. We encourage for everybody to voice themselves and we believe in sharing thoughts, reflections, and dedicated feedback as a tool to achieve creative excellence. We have created a work ethic of openness and professional respect where our roles and competencies are clearly communicated, and we build on each other’s competences to grow and succeed individually and as a team.
We believe that mindfulness serves as a perfect counterweight to the traditionally fast-paced fashion industry and so we strive to integrate it on a daily basis. Besides stimulating a calm working environment through carefully curated playlists, considerate behavior, clean desk policy, we have monthly visits by our house massage therapist. We also start our monthly meetings by singing together, to create a stronger bond between the different teams and individuals at MUNTHE. Quarterly we invite orators with a specific talent, that shares their specialization and experiences with the MUNTHE team. This is to lift and to be a source of inspiration that we call MUNTHE MIND.
We believe in a more empathic and sustainable world where holistic values flow and togetherness grow. The importance of trust builds a strong foundation and further strengthen the teamwork. Common sense and credence are strong pillars with-in the brand, that ensures internal and external empathy. At MUNTHE, we believe in what we are doing, which means we believe in each other.
Ideas are the very substance of our profession and the smallest of ideas can lead to a strong collection. At MUNTHE, we acknowledge that and believe that to foster a creative environment, ideas must be shared freely and confidently across professional competencies and seniority. And to elaborate on and challenge these ideas one must feel confident, valued and appreciated to do so. At MUNTHE, we implement such a culture by having an explicit and systematic Open Ear Policy where everybody is actively encouraged to contribute with operational or creative ideas.
At MUNTHE, we are trust-driven in every aspect of our business because we fundamentally believe that everybody is doing their best and that we are all dedicated professionals working towards the same goal. Whether it be suppliers, agents, employees or sub-contractors our experience is that trust breeds trust and if people feel seen, heard and appreciated, they will collaborate and lift their individual tasks to the best of their ability.
At MUNTHE, we consider one of our biggest organizational strengths to be our ability to scout for and hire the right people. This approach is deeply rooted in Naja Munthe’s personal belief that a strong team builds on trust, respect and caring for each other and that a dedicated and thriving team by far is the biggest competitive edge of a company. We nurture our team dynamics on a daily basis by promoting an honest and clear dialogue and genuinely caring for each other on a personal and professional level as we work interdisciplinary and pull together as a group. Furthermore, to strengthen our togetherness we have initiated our monthly MUNTHE MIXER social event where we meet after work for fun activities in relaxed setting for instance, we have developed our very own signature cocktail at a drink tasting session.
Anybody who works creatively knows that the explorative nature of creativity needs a little grounding from time to time. At MUNTHE, we strive to practice a commonsense approach to our decision making in creative and all other matters. We do so by using insights and data as a foundation to make well informed and thought through decisions and we apply logical and scenario-based thinking when we need to choose between different solutions, all in the effort to practice good judgements that will channel our creativity and enable us to maximize our processes.
Art allows us to broaden our perspective, foster new ideas, bring stories to life, and empower us to express ourselves. At MUNTHE, art is an inexhaustible source of inspiration and the very cornerstone of how we design, act, and engage with the world. We surround ourselves with art in a bid to push our creativity to new levels.
ART MONDAY is an initiative that dates back to 2021. Visionary still but groundbreaking at the time, it was started with the ambition to use our platform to promote talented female artists. As with other industries in the world, the art industry is also marked by gender inequality with female artists being less represented in galleries, museums and with collectors and with a lower quota on women curators, gallery owner and art industry representatives. Actively committed to change this, for more than a decade we have been promoting female artists, hiring them for print production and buying and exhibiting their art at our shows and in our headquarter. The imbalance is slowly tipping and with a total of more than 100 female artists featured on our platforms, we pride ourselves of supporting them.
Since the early days as student at Design School Kolding (then Art School Kolding), art has been an embedded source of inspiration to founder Naja Munthe. But her talent goes far beyond fashion design and spills over on multiple other medias from large ceramic pieces and paintings to interior and accessory design and as a result, her constantly creating nature combined with a highly aesthetic eye leave their tangible marks on every element of the MUNTHE brand tying it all together into one coherent, unique embodiment of her creative force.
When you are systematically subjected to art as a source of inspiration, inevitably you acquire a piece of art or two. That is why one of the major privileges of having a prodigious Headquarter at Holmen in Central Copenhagen is to have space enough to display the many pieces of art that we have collected throughout the years. From Naja’s own pieces to pieces created by some of the many female artists that has been featured on ART MONDAY, our space is now delicately curated with art ranging from sculptures, paintings and installations to ceramics, furniture and industrial design and whether you are sipping a freshly squeezed juice at the kitchen, attending a meeting, working at your desk or using the restroom our passion for art is ever present.
At MUNTHE, art is the primary driver of our creative process. From dedicating styles in every collection to artistic prints made by either Naja Munthe or artists from ART MONDAY to serving as backdrops in our campaigns, shows or as focal point in internal or public events, art serves as an anchor to all our activities as organization.
In a world that is gradually becoming more elusive, we continue to believe in the power of tactility. At MUNTHE, from the smallest details to the selection of the fabric, craftsmanship is the tool we use to design long-lasting curated styles. The art of tailoring is part of our techniques to ensure the best possible shapes and quality in our creations. As a heritage brand, MUNTHE have a focus in making sure that we deliver the highest quality in our work.
At MUNTHE, we celebrate creative excellence! And we strive to cultivate this in any aspects of our process, with everybody involved. We believe that by empowering our design team to play freely in the design process, building on everything from inputs and involvement from our other teams and stakeholders to doing tactile experiments and experiences with different materials, we pave the way for an interactive approach with a state-of-the-art result to match. From creating our own prints and patterns from scratch to hand-made items for our shows and hand-stitching key styles to achieve a specific look and feel, we allow ourselves to keep an open mind throughout the creation process and embody our love for craftmanship.
To Naja Munthe, designing clothes is ultimately about paying tribute to the female body and believing that you can un-leash the potential of women by making them feel comfortable in their own skin and the clothes that they are wearing. At Munthe, we believe that meticulousness with the very construction of the style is essential when creating clothes that women would wear which is why we do most of our pattern making ourselves in-house as opposed to using pre-made patterns. As a result, one of the most consistent feedbacks we get, is that every style falls equally beautiful on every body regardless shape and age hence making all our design inclusive and relevant across time, body shape and age.
As with all the other elements of our design process, the curation of choosing the right material for the right style is of key importance in ensuring the high quality that we look for in the end result. We choose materials based on our Preferred Material List, prioritizing natural fibers and aiming for 50% or more to be responsibly sourced. Once we have chosen the materials, we receive them and test them in-house and wear them to see if they can pass the test of use. This way, we are able to make well-informed choices on the materials that we end up using in our collections.
We strive to create clothes that you would wear until it is literally worn to pieces, as we believe that longevity is both environmentally sustainable and appealing to modern women. We get that in a piece by being attentive to every little detail in the tailoring of our styles. From the detailed and high-quality seams and lining to the fact that every style is tested on live models and by our teams themselves, we care for the tiniest details to make sure that our Munthe customers can enjoy their pieces for years to come.

It has always been core to the MUNTHE brand to be conscious and constantly reflect on how we are in the world. Being a fashion brand, by nature we are not in a sustainable industry, but we believe that by using our brand as a powerful platform and by continuously striving to achieve a little more we will be able to see tangible results.
We interpret sustainability holistically and believe that we are on a never-ending journey where we constantly need to explore and evaluate how to best invest in progress. We constantly need to take an honest look at all aspects of our production from choosing the best for purpose or certified material to creating better working conditions for our suppliers and employees. Finally, it is a journey towards unleashing the power and potential of women - an issue that has always been very close to Naja Munthe’s heart.
During 2024 we will publish our first responsibility report. Until then, we have identified 6 conscious commitments that we work determined with to implement, measure and challenge so that we can be the best and most progressive version of ourselves.
